Cape Palmerston – Mackay Northern Beaches

1/7/2015

Wonderful breakfast in the camp kitchen out in the open, beautiful weather and views as well as interesting people to talk to in the morning. One of the guys, originally from the UK, who is on a 4 week camping trip with his family, works as a repairman for hail damaged cars. He works half the year in Australia, half the year in Europe – wherever the season for hail damage is. He's been a few times in Austria as well, as we seem to have bad hail storms every other year in certain areas. Interesting.

I drove to Mackay and walked into the local tourism office. Discussed some options with them for sailing trips around the Whitsunday Islands/Outer Great Barrier Reef and booked on of the trips. Hence I need to be in Airlie Beach tomorrow afternoon to check in, we depart on Friday morning for 3 days/2 nights. Looking forward to that trip!

Called the local dive shop but they couldn't find my registration as licensed PADI open water diver. What a shock to the system! So I tried to get hold of anybody at the dive school in the Philippines where I did the dive course last year but wasn't successful yet. Will try again later and tomorrow.

Continuing on through Mackay, a city of about 120,000 inhabitants, I selected a campsite on Blacks Beach, a fantastic place at the Northern Beaches. During the day, I visited most of the Northern Beaches and found Blacks Beach to be the best.

Some Northern Beach in Mackay

Beach run - went from where I took to photo to the very far right and back

After the run, ready for the rather cold pool

Did another beach run in the late afternoon, followed by a cool down in the swimming pool. This campsite is almost like a resort!

In the evening, I caught up with Bernie, a former project manager in our downtown Perth office back in the days, who had his office right next to mine. He works for one of the coal terminals here in the area. Had a great pizza, a glass of wine and a very interesting conversation.

Distance traveled: 130km
