Gold Coast- Main Beach - Surfers Paradise

Main Beach – Surfers Paradise

It was raining heavily yesterday night, but the van seems to be water proof. The big drops made quite some noise, but in a pleasant way, especially noticeable because everything around was silent.
I guess you have to set the dress code clearly on the door and focus on the essentials ;-)

It rained quite a bit in the morning as well, got wet going to the shower, then on my way to the camp kitchen and back. Left Byron Bay late morning, no point staying at the beach or going on the nice walks in this kind of weather.

I stopped in Tweeds Head and Coolangatta on the way up, had some good coffee and a second breakfast.

Second breakfast, and first slices of bread this week

Gold Coast, a metropolitan already in Queensland, is a huge conglomerate and from what I read recently has already around 600 000 inhabitants. I guess it must look like Miami, you got a wonderful beach but then skyscrapers and other tall, high rising apartment and hotel buildings right next to it. Not my cup of tea to be honest.
Downtown camping

Anyway, I checked in at the Main Beach caravan park. Great park and the second most expensive so far – coming very close to Byron Bay prices! But the location is really good too, the beach is just across the road it is only about a 3 km walk to downtown Surfers Paradise.
Despite the weather, I walked along the foreshore into Surfers Paradise. My Mammut gear kept me quite dry. After a good, almost 1.5 hour walk, including strolling around in the mall, I returned to the caravan park and tried the heated pool. Quite nice on a rainy, miserably grayish day.
The walk down from Main Beach to Surfers was nice but wet

Lifeguards were on duty, despite the weather conditions

Mel, the super high energy girl that we met 2 years ago on the Kimberley trip, lives in Main Beach as well, right next to the caravan park. Catching up with her was, as expected, extremely good fun. As she's a professional hair stylist, I seized the opportunity to get styled up for Brisbane. Getting my hair cut on the 11th floor of a high rising apartment building with good views of Main Beach and with a glass of red wine to fight the cold and wet weather was a treat.
Over a delicious Thai dinner, we laughed a lot, shared our memories from the Kimberley trip and spoke about what happened in the meanwhile. Mel is going on the same ragged Adventure Expedition to the Kimberley's again. She hadn't had a holiday in between and how she called it the 'aboriginal' in her needs a bit of outback again. A cool thing she showed me was that she made it onto the cover of the magazine from the tour company, with one of the many photos I took at our last trip. Awesome!
